  1. A comet is a small, icy body orbiting the 
  2. Sun, usually on a highly elliptical path. A 
  3. comet consists of a central nucleus a few 
  4. kilometres across, and has been likened to a 
  5. dirty snowball because it consists mostly of 
  6. ice mixed with dust. As the comet approaches 
  7. the Sun the nucleus heats up, releasing gas 
  8. and dust which form a tenuous coma, up to 
  9. 100,000km (60,000miles) wide, around the 
  10. nucleus.
